Description: Possible vocalizations of a Mountain Beaver
Notes: A tape recorder was left overnight at a confirmed Mountain Beaver burrow in the north Seattle area; the animal was not observed vocalizing, but a tentative i.d. of the sound was made based on the proximity of the animal; the Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America describes the sound as "Usually silent, sometimes makes soft whines or sobs, also may squeal or grind teeth. Probably does not "boom" despite the old vernacular name "boomer"; local time: approximately 2 AM
