Common Name: Eelgrass
Scientific Name: Zostera marina
Date: 2014-07-12
Time: 10:34AM
Creator: Rice, Jeff
Description: The underwater sound of a species of eelgrass
Notes: A hydrophone captures the sound of oxygen bubbling from eelgrass leaves as the plant absorbs and photosynthesizes the sun's rays. Eelgrass was in less than a foot of water. Walked/waded several hundred yards to a patch of eelgrass as the tide was going out. There was a lot of non-native eelgrass (Z. japonica) in the general area, but the recording was made at a good patch of what appeared to be only native eelgrass (Z. marina). The hydrophone rested on the mud below the water amidst the eelgrass. Occasional creatures like snails and crabs venture near or on the hydrophone. Weather conditions: Air temp 75 degrees Fahrenheit; Humidity 56%; Wind 0-2 mph; skies sunny with light clouds; see also http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=pbfw1
